The Bay Chorale is a community choir founded on the goal of providing a choral singing opportunity for experienced singers in and around the St. Margaret’s Bay area. We are primarily an adult (age 18+) choir, with membership of high school-aged singers at the discretion of the Artistic Director. Currently, we are programming for women’s voices.
Our focus is to provide singers with an opportunity to develop their musical skills and education via practice and performance of varied repertoire. Our members are united by the love of singing and a commitment to musical excellence. Our singers come from many communities around the Bay area and represent a wide array of backgrounds.
For the 2017-18 season, we are trying out a new schedule! Our fall season will run September to December as usual, with holiday concerts on the weekend of December 9-10. This season we are planning a longer winter break. It’s our hope that this will avoid winter weather cancellations, ensure safer driving conditions for all our members, and maybe make our spring term more accessible for our members who travel each winter. Spring term will launch in early March with a one-day weekend singing retreat, and then we will resume weekly Wednesday rehearsals until a spring concert in early June.
Fees for the fall 2017 term will be $165. The Bay Chorale’s goal is to make singing accessible regardless of personal circumstances. For this reason, we are able to arrange payment by installments or arrange a sliding scale fee for members who would otherwise not be able to participate. Singers’ fees help to pay for facility rental, music purchase and honoraria for our professional staff.
Choral experience and ability to read music are certainly an asset but not necessary. Choristers should have the ability to match pitch, and an ear for harmony. Prospective members can expect to complete a short, informal voice placement session with our director at their first rehearsal. This will include singing a few lines of a familiar song or a scale with the piano, and will help our director to assess the singer’s voice and appropriate placement within the choir. Singers are required to attend weekly rehearsals and expected to review repertoire at home between rehearsals.
The choir’s cohesion and success is due in large part to community spirit and group effort. We have an enthusiastic volunteer board of choir members who keep us organized and everyone pitches in to make things work. Singers are expected to promote the concert within the community, participate in fundraising, sell concert tickets, decorate venues and share the many small tasks that any successful organization involves. And we have great fun doing it!
